Stargazing

formerly known as Astrology

Constellation observation. Time-of-day buffs that shape every other skill.

Stargazing is Tideward's astrology trade — renamed from Melvor Idle's "Astrology" in May 2026 because Melvor coined the term and the trademark cluster matters. The mechanic: observe constellations at telescopes scattered across the world; each constellation has a real-time-of-day window when it's visible; observing during the window grants Stargazing XP and a temporary buff to the constellation's associated other skill.

How Stargazing works

Each constellation has a 4-hour visibility window keyed to your local time of day (the in-game system follows the device clock). During that window, you can travel to a telescope and "observe" the constellation for Stargazing XP. The observation also unlocks (or refreshes) a temporary skill buff that lasts hours after the window closes — Forging's Anvil constellation gives a Forging XP boost; the Hunt constellation gives a Quarry XP boost; etc.

Observation rolls success against your Stargazing level vs the constellation's difficulty. Failures still grant small XP. Higher levels unlock the ability to observe multiple constellations during their overlapping windows, and to extend the active buff duration.

This is the genuinely innovative skill in the game. It's the only one that interacts with real-world time of day. A morning Stargazing session that locks in three constellation buffs sets up the entire day's training across other skills. The Stargazing-buff-stack is one of the highest-leverage actions a max-level character takes.

Inputs

  • A telescope at the right time of day
  • A clear sky (some weather effects can block observation)
  • Optional: Star charts (improves accuracy)

Outputs

  • Stargazing XP
  • Time-keyed buffs to other skills
  • Star fragments (a rare currency)

Tips for training Stargazing

  1. Plan your training day around Stargazing observations. The buff stack pays back across every other skill.
  2. Some constellations only appear seasonally (in real time). Check the Almanac for the active set during the current month.
  3. Star fragments (rare drop) buy Stargazing-specific gear and a few unique Apothecary recipes.
  4. A capped-Stargazing character gets buffs from constellations that lower-level players can't see at all.
  5. Binding has a niche synergy with certain constellations — high-tier binding ritual XP is boosted under specific stars.

Frequently asked about Stargazing

Why renamed from Astrology?

"Astrology" was Melvor Idle's coinage in the same App Store category. To avoid trademark cluster, Tideward renamed the skill to "Stargazing" during the May 2026 rebrand. The constellation-observation mechanic is unchanged.

Does Stargazing follow real time?

Yes. Constellations are visible during real-world windows keyed to your device's local time. Morning observations unlock different constellations than evening observations.

Can I AFK Stargazing?

Partially. The observation action itself is fast; the rate-limiter is constellation availability. You can't observe a not-currently-visible constellation no matter how long you wait.
