Woodcutting

Trees to logs. The first AFK loop nearly every player runs.

Woodcutting is the entry-point gathering skill — the one new players almost always train first because it asks nothing of them and gives steadily. Pick a tree, swing your hatchet, watch your log inventory fill. The deeper game is in tree-tier progression: each new wood unlocks at a Woodcutting milestone, and the fastest XP rates come from the tree you can chop the fastest, not the highest-level one available.

How Woodcutting works

Each tree has a base Woodcutting level requirement, an XP-per-log value, and a chop-speed roll based on your level above the requirement. A normal tree at Woodcutting 1 chops in seconds; a magic tree at Woodcutting 75 takes longer per log but pays much more XP.

The rate-limiting factor is usually the tree itself. Most trees deplete after a few logs and respawn after a delay — your effective XP per hour depends on how many trees are nearby. Late-game wood (Magic, Yew, Redwood) tends to grow in dedicated groves where the respawn timing keeps you continuously chopping.

Hatchet tier affects swing speed and slightly affects XP per chop. Bronze through Dragon hatchets unlock at the same tiers as the weapon ladder. A Dragon hatchet at Woodcutting 60 is the AFK standard; the Crystal hatchet at 75+ is the end-game. Bird nests drop randomly while chopping — they contain rings, crafting materials, and rare seeds; pick them up.

Inputs

  • A hatchet (Bronze to Crystal)
  • Trees of an appropriate level

Outputs

  • Woodcutting XP
  • Logs (raw material for Kindling, Forging, Bowcraft)
  • Bird nests (rings, seeds, crafting materials)

Tips for training Woodcutting

  1. Get to Woodcutting 41 (Willow) early — willows give the best XP-per-hour for many tiers thanks to their fast respawn.
  2. Bird nests are easy to miss in offline progression — check your nest count after every long session.
  3. A higher-tier hatchet can be wielded for combat bonus too. No reason not to upgrade.
  4. Dragon hatchet has a special "infinite swings" mode — at 75+ it stops needing actions to land chops.
  5. Magic trees pay the highest per-log XP at level 75; redwoods pay more raw XP per log at 90 but chop slower.

Frequently asked about Woodcutting

What's the fastest Woodcutting XP method?

Willows from level 30 to 60, then Magic trees from 75 to 99 in dense groves. The math favors fast respawn over high per-log XP at most levels.

Do logs do anything besides Woodcutting XP?

Yes. Kindling burns them for Kindling XP, Bowcraft fletches them into bows and arrow shafts, and Forging uses some types as fuel for special smelts. Logs are one of the most cross-skill-useful raw materials in the game.

Are there any rare drops while Woodcutting?

Bird nests drop randomly and contain rings, crafting materials, and rare seeds for Farming. Some trees also drop tier-specific bark used in Inscription and Apothecary recipes.
