Pilfering

formerly known as Thieving

Pickpocket NPCs and stalls for gold and unique drops. Risk per attempt, reward per success.

Pilfering is the rogue skill — pickpocket NPCs, raid stalls, crack chests. Renamed from RuneScape's "Thieving" during the May 2026 rebrand because that was too distinctive a coinage. The skill is its own AFK loop with a twist: each attempt has a fail chance that scales inversely with your level, and a fail does small damage to your character. A high-Vitality build can pickpocket overnight; a low-Vitality build dies before morning.

How Pilfering works

Pickpocketing an NPC rolls success against your Pilfering level vs the NPC's difficulty. Success grants Pilfering XP and a random gold/loot drop. Failure stuns you briefly and deals a small amount of damage. Higher-tier targets have better drops and bigger XP per success — but higher fail rates and bigger fail damage.

Market stalls are the AFK alternative — no fail damage, but slower XP per attempt and longer cooldowns between attempts. Most experienced players run stalls when they need to AFK overnight and pickpocket when they're actively watching the game.

The rare drops are why Pilfering matters past the early game. Many of the best-in-slot rings, gem sets, and unique consumables come exclusively from high-tier pickpocket targets. The capped Pilfering character can afford to pickpocket a knight overnight, eat the fail damage, and wake up with a stack of rare loot.

Inputs

  • An NPC or stall to pilfer
  • Vitality cushion (for fail damage)
  • Optional: light footwear (reduces fail rate slightly)

Outputs

  • Pilfering XP
  • Gold and loot from successful steals
  • Rare drops from high-tier targets

Tips for training Pilfering

  1. Stuns from failed pickpockets are short but they reset your AFK rhythm. Use stalls for overnight; NPCs when you're watching.
  2. Higher Vitality lets you pickpocket harder targets without dying. Train both together when you're building toward Knights.
  3. Rogue gear (Pilfering-specific armour set) reduces fail rate and increases double-loot chance. Worth the unlock grind.
  4. Pilfering pairs well with Magic teleports — high-tier targets are spread across the map; teleports save real-world minutes.
  5. Some unique drops only come from specific NPCs. Check the Almanac entry before committing to a long pickpocketing session.

Frequently asked about Pilfering

Why is it called Pilfering instead of Thieving?

"Thieving" is a RuneScape-specific noun-form. "Pilfering" was chosen during Tideward's May 2026 rebrand to keep the mechanic familiar to genre veterans while sidestepping the Jagex coinage.

Can I die from failed pickpockets?

Yes, if your Vitality runs out. Each failed attempt does a small amount of damage. Always make sure your healing food + Vitality pool can survive a long string of fails before AFK.

What's the best XP-per-hour Pilfering target?

It depends on your level and risk tolerance. Knights are the classic late-game choice; higher-tier targets pay more per success but fail more often. Stalls are slower but safer.
