Kindling

formerly known as Firemaking

Burn logs for Kindling XP and bonfire bonuses that buff every other skill.

Kindling is Tideward's firemaking-style trade — light bonfires from logs to gain Kindling XP and produce active fires that boost combat and gathering rates for nearby characters. Renamed from "Firemaking" in May 2026 because the original phrasing was too RuneScape-specific. The mechanic is the same: convert logs into XP and into temporary world-state buffs.

How Kindling works

Light a log with a tinderbox to create a fire. The fire burns for several minutes, giving Kindling XP on creation and a passive boost to the fire-bonus skill while it burns. Log tier affects XP and burn duration — magic logs burn for nearly 10 minutes per fire and grant the largest Kindling XP per log.

The game's twist on the genre: bonfire stacking. Multiple players (or alts in the same household) can contribute logs to a single bonfire to extend its burn time and amplify its boost. Tideward's single-player design means most players fire-stack alone — but the bonfire mechanic still gives a stronger boost than scattered single fires.

High Kindling unlocks the ability to add herb-infused incense to your fires (with Apothecary), giving extra targeted boosts to specific other skills. Fire-bonus stacking with prayer effects from Vigil is the closest thing Tideward has to a "buff window" mini-game.

Inputs

  • Logs (from Woodcutting)
  • A tinderbox
  • Optional: incense herbs (with Apothecary recipes)

Outputs

  • Kindling XP
  • Active bonfires (temporary buffs to other skills)
  • Ash (used in some Apothecary and Inscription recipes)

Tips for training Kindling

  1. Magic logs are the Kindling XP champion past level 75. Burn them at a stationary spot for AFK efficiency.
  2. Bonfires give a small XP bonus to nearby Cooking — combine the two skills for free XP.
  3. Incense additions unlock at Kindling 60+. Worth pursuing for boss-window buff stacks.
  4. Some Kindling-specific drops (rare ash variants) feed end-game Apothecary potions. Save them.
  5. A capped Kindling-and-Apothecary character can buff every other training session by 5-15%. The compounding effect is real.

Frequently asked about Kindling

Why renamed from Firemaking?

"Firemaking" was distinctive RuneScape phrasing. "Kindling" carries the same meaning while reducing trademark cluster risk in the same App Store category. The mechanic is unchanged.

Do bonfires expire?

Yes. Each bonfire burns for several minutes (longer for higher-tier logs and incense additions). The buff lapses when the fire dies. Add more logs to extend an active fire.

Can I AFK Kindling overnight?

Sort of. You can't passively burn a stockpile of logs while away — Kindling requires the active "light fire" action. But the bonfires you light at the start of an AFK session will buff the other skills you're training.
