Craft runes at altars. The supply line for every spell Magic ever casts.

Inscription is Tideward's rune-crafting trade — visit ancient altars, imbue blank rune essence, walk away with stacks of Air Runes or Cosmic Runes or whatever your Magic build needs. Renamed from "Runecrafting" in May 2026 because the original Jagex coinage was too distinctive. The mechanic is unchanged: travel to an altar, sacrifice essence, gain runes and Inscription XP.

How Inscription works

Each rune type requires its own altar (Air, Mind, Water, Earth, Fire, Body, Cosmic, Chaos, Nature, Law, Death, Blood, Soul). Travel there with a stack of rune essence (or pure essence at higher levels), use the altar, and your full essence stack converts into runes plus Inscription XP. Higher Inscription levels unlock multi-rune-per-essence yields — at Inscription 99, a single essence can produce multiple Air Runes.

Tideward's twist on the genre: altars are scattered across the world map, and travel time matters. Magic teleports drastically reduce the per-trip overhead. A maxed Inscription player teleports to altar, crafts, teleports to bank, refills, teleports back — the per-tick rate is high but the action requires active engagement.

For AFK, the Hearth runic chamber (mid-game settlement upgrade) lets you craft runes from your bank without travel. Slower per-rune than altar crafting but the only Inscription method that runs unattended overnight. Most players go altar-trip during active play, runic-chamber during AFK windows.

Tips for training Inscription

  1. Pure essence at Inscription 30+ unlocks higher-tier altars. Stop using regular essence as soon as you can.
  2. Magic teleports cut altar trip time by 80%+. Train Magic to 55+ before any serious Inscription session.
  3. The Runic Chamber Hearth upgrade is the unlock that makes overnight Inscription possible. Build it as soon as you can.
  4. Multi-rune yield bonuses scale aggressively past level 75. The XP rate goes up but the per-rune cost goes down — train high.
  5. Some recipes (combination runes) merge two rune types in one altar action. Check the Almanac for late-game options.

Why renamed from Runecrafting?
