Ranged
Bows, throwing knives, and the discipline of holding your distance.
Ranged is the third combat style — bows, crossbows, throwing weapons. It trades the weight of melee armour for accuracy at distance and the freedom to shoot back without taking a hit. Most idle RPG players use Ranged for boss fights where being out of melee range is the whole strategy, and for dragon hunts where dragonfire makes melee a bad idea.
How Ranged works
Ranged uses a single skill for both accuracy and damage — there's no Strength-equivalent for it. Each level raises both how often your arrows land and how hard they hit when they do. Ranged armour (leather, hard leather, studded, then dragonhide tiers) adds to your Ranged accuracy and gives modest evasion. Heavier armour penalizes Ranged damage, so range builds wear light kit.
Ammunition is the big difference from melee — you consume arrows, bolts, or knives every shot. Bowcraft (the artisan skill) lets you craft your own. The throughput math matters here: 1 arrow per shot at 2 shots per second = 7,200 arrows over a 1-hour AFK session. Most players keep a stack of 20,000+ in their bank.
Accuracy stance trains Ranged XP only. Rapid stance gives a small attack-speed bonus and trains XP slightly slower per shot, but more shots per minute. Long-range stance trains some Defense XP at the cost of attack speed — useful for hybrid Defense/Ranged builds that want both.
Inputs
- A bow / crossbow / throwing weapon
- Ammunition (arrows, bolts, knives)
- Light armour (heavier armour penalizes damage)
Outputs
- Ranged XP
- Loot drops
- Bow- and arrow-tier unlocks
Tips for training Ranged
- Always check ammunition before AFK. Running out mid-session means an hour of standing there missing.
- Dragon hide armour at Ranged 70 is the AFK ceiling for most players — it never breaks and the accuracy bonus is enormous.
- Throwing knives are the secret AFK favorite — fast, light, and Bowcraft-craftable in huge stacks.
- Long-range stance is great early — 50% Ranged XP + 50% Defense XP is faster than training them separately.
- Ranged is the only combat skill that interacts with Pilfering — high Ranged opens silent ambush options on certain Pilfering targets.

Frequently asked about Ranged
Does Ranged have a separate damage skill like Attack/Strength?
No. Ranged is a single skill that drives both accuracy and damage. This is intentional — it makes Ranged simpler to train but harder to push to the absolute damage ceiling that a pure-Strength melee build can reach.
Can I train Ranged offline?
Yes, like every combat style in Tideward. The offline simulator consumes arrows, calculates accuracy/damage, and applies XP gains and drops at the same rates as active play, for up to 24 hours.
What's the best ammunition tier?
It depends on your bow. A higher-tier bow with lower-tier arrows shoots fast but soft; the same bow with matched-tier arrows hits much harder. Aim to keep your arrow tier within 10 levels of your Ranged level.
