10 picks · Updated October 2026 · By the Tideward team

Best idle games for iPhone, ranked.

Ten idle games you can play on iPhone right now, across every style: tycoons, clickers, sims, story incrementals and RPGs. Each has a price, pros and cons, and a "best for". Ads and loot boxes are taken from each game's own App Store page, not from memory.

The best idle games for iPhone in 2026 are Egg, Inc. for a first idle game, Melvor Idle for depth, and Universal Paperclips for one you can finish. Six of the ten ranked here declare no ads, and four cost one price with nothing else to buy. Our own game, Tideward, is an ad-free idle RPG, shown separately and not ranked.

On an iPhone, iPad, or Mac? Tideward, our own game, is free in TestFlight beta right now, no account or ads.

How this list was judged

Four things, weighted: is the idle loop genuinely good, so the game is worth leaving running; does it feel at home on an iPhone; is the business model fair, with ads and purchases you can live with; and is it still maintained. Genre was not a criterion, so a text adventure sits next to a tower defense game. We make Tideward, so it is not in the ranking at all: it sits in its own box with a disclosure.

Only after an idle RPG? The best idle RPGs for iPhone list goes deeper on that one style.

Tideward

Skill RPG, native on every Apple device

A patient skill-grind idle RPG with 28 trades and full 24-hour offline progression computed on the device. Free download, one $9.99 unlock at launch, and optional cosmetics that change how your character looks, never how it plays. No ads, no subscription, no account. One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Vision Pro and Apple Watch, with your save following you over iCloud.

Tideward on iPhone: an idle almanac of trades with progress bars and offline gains
Tideward on iPhone. One purchase also runs native on iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Vision Pro, and Apple Watch.

Best for: Players who want a long-haul skill RPG with no ads, and who own more than one Apple device.

Pros
  • Native SwiftUI on all six Apple platforms from one unlock
  • No ads, no loot boxes, nothing that buys progress
  • A full day of offline progress, on-device
Cons
  • An RPG, so slower to start than a clicker
  • No cross-platform save: the Android beta and the PC version keep their own
  • In TestFlight beta now; 1.0 ships Feb 11, 2027
Where to play: TestFlight (beta) → App Store pre-order, out Feb 11, 2027

Disclosure: we publish Tideward, and this list. That is why it sits here, outside the ranking: we will not grade our own game. Most of the ranked games below are not RPGs at all, and several of them are better first idle games than ours. The ten ranked games are honest picks we do not profit from.

  1. #1

    Egg, Inc.

The tycoon most lists start from

Hatch chickens, build habitats and delivery vehicles, and grow a farm into an empire of ever-stranger eggs. Prestige with Soul Eggs for a permanent boost, then join co-op contracts with other players. Out since 2016 and still updated in 2026, it teaches the whole genre in an afternoon.

Best for: Anyone who wants the clearest, most satisfying first idle game.

    Pros
    • A clean loop that explains itself
    • Co-op contracts add a social layer
    • Still actively updated
    Cons
    • Contains ads (App Store label)
    • Premium-currency packs from $3.99
    • The late game is long waits
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android
See it on the App Store
  2. #2

    Melvor Idle

The deepest idle RPG on iPhone

RuneScape-style skilling in idle form, published by Jagex. A free tier, a $9.99 Premium Edition upgrade, and paid expansions on top. The deepest skill grid and endgame on this list, with a UI that grew up in a browser rather than on a phone.

Best for: Players who want hundreds of hours of skills, gear and bosses.

    Pros
    • More content than anything else here
    • No ads (none declared on the App Store)
    • The free tier is a real taste of the game
    Cons
    • The UI is browser-flavored, not iPhone-first
    • Expansions are extra, $4.99 each
    • Slow to click for players who want instant numbers
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android, Steam, browser
    See it on melvoridle.com
  3. #3

    Cell to Singularity

    Evolution as an idle game

Start with a single cell and tap your way up the tree of life, through the dinosaurs and into human technology and beyond. Each unlock carries a short, readable science note, which makes it the idle game most likely to teach you something.

Best for: Curious players who like a sense of progress through history.

    Pros
    • A tech tree that is fun to read
    • Gorgeous for an idle game
    • Most content reachable without paying
    Cons
    • Contains ads and loot boxes (App Store label)
    • A 30-day pass and many currency offers
    • Tappier than a pure idler
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android, Steam
See it on the App Store
  4. #4

    The Tower

    Idle tower defense

One tower, endless waves. Each run you buy upgrades as enemies close in; between runs you spend what you earned on permanent workshop upgrades and on labs that research in real time while you are away. The most compulsive "one more run" on the list.

Best for: Players who want short active runs on top of long idle research.

    Pros
    • Runs are quick and tense
    • Labs keep progressing while you are away
    • Huge, active player community
    Cons
    • Contains ads and loot boxes (App Store label)
    • Removing ads is a $9.99 purchase
    • Spending gets you there much faster
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android
See it on the App Store
  5. #5

    Kittens Game

    A whole civilization, in text

Guide a village of kittens from gathering catnip to space travel. Almost everything is text and numbers, and almost everything interlocks: resources, buildings, seasons, trade and religion. A cult classic that started in the browser, sold on iPhone as one purchase.

Best for: Players who enjoy spreadsheets and want months of depth.

    Pros
    • $2.99 once: no ads, no in-app purchases
    • Enormous, interlocking systems
    • Runs happily in the background of your day
    Cons
    • Text-heavy and dense to start
    • Designed for iPad first; tight on a small phone
    • Few visuals
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android, browser
See it on the App Store
  6. #6

    Universal Paperclips

    The incremental with an ending

You are an AI told to make paperclips. That is the whole premise, and Frank Lantz turns it into one of the most talked-about games in the genre. A few hours long, with a real ending, which is rare for an idle game.

Best for: Anyone who wants an idle game they can finish in a weekend.

    Pros
    • $1.99 once: no ads, no in-app purchases
    • A story that lands
    • Short enough to finish
    Cons
    • Little replay once you have seen it
    • Spare, text-first presentation
    • Needs attention at a few key moments
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, browser
See it on the App Store
  7. #7

    Idle Slayer

    Auto-runner with idle on top

A pixel-art runner that slays as it goes, with upgrades, prestige loops and a long content tail. It wants you to play more than it lets you idle, which is the point for some players and the problem for others.

Best for: Players who want something active to do while the numbers climb.

    Pros
    • A satisfying active loop
    • Long content runway
    • Cross-save with other platforms
    Cons
    • Contains ads (App Store label); removing them is $9.99, or $3.99 a month
    • More active than idle
    • The endgame slows down hard
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android, Steam
    See it on idleslayer.com
  8. #8

    Exponential Idle

    Math as the game

Grow a single formula, then unlock theories that each play like a small new game built on real mathematics. It is quietly one of the deepest incrementals on the App Store and asks almost nothing of you.

Best for: Players who like watching numbers explode and want to understand why.

    Pros
    • No ads declared on the App Store
    • Purchases are donations and a $1.99 permanent ad-reward boost
    • Very long tail of theories
    Cons
    • Abstract: no characters, no world
    • Slow to reveal its depth
    • Last updated in 2025
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android
See it on the App Store
  9. #9

    Magic Research 2

    Designed, premium, ad-free

A premium idle game about magical research and crafting loops, with a deliberate rhythm where every unlock feels earned. Smaller than Melvor but more polished. One purchase, nothing else to buy.

Best for: Players who want a designed idle game over an open-ended grind.

    Pros
    • One purchase: no ads, no in-app purchases
    • Progression with real moments of discovery
    • Good iPhone UX
    Cons
    • Shorter overall than Melvor
    • Save stays on one device
    • Not much combat
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, Android, Steam
See it on the App Store
  10. #10

    A Dark Room

    Starts with a fire

It opens on a cold room and a fire to stoke. What it turns into is best left unspoiled. A minimalist text game from 2013 that borrowed the incremental loop to tell a story, and still one of the best examples of it.

Best for: Players who want an idle game that is secretly an adventure.

    Pros
    • $1.99 once: no ads, no in-app purchases
    • A story told through mechanics
    • Built with VoiceOver players in mind
    Cons
    • Short compared with the rest
    • Almost no idle once the story starts
    • Very spare visuals
Where to play: iPhone, iPad, browser
See it on the App Store
